Breakfast by the Sea – Restored by Grace

“When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ … Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?’ … He said to him, ‘Feed My sheep.’”

— John 21:9, 12, 15–17 (excerpted)

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

— Romans 8:1

Devotional Reflection

Peter had denied Jesus three times around a charcoal fire. Now, after the resurrection, Jesus builds another fire—not to confront Peter with shame, but to restore him with grace.

Jesus doesn’t begin with a lecture or a rebuke. He begins with an invitation: “Come and have breakfast.” He meets Peter in the ordinary, extends kindness, and then gently addresses the failure that must have still haunted Peter’s heart.

Three denials. Three questions.

“Do you love Me?”

Each question met not with condemnation, but with commission: “Feed My sheep.”

Jesus restores Peter’s identity and renews his calling, not by ignoring the past, but by redeeming it. That’s what grace does—it turns our worst moments into the soil where new purpose can grow.

If you’re carrying the weight of failure or regret, know this: Jesus has prepared a place for you by the fire. He invites you to come, to be fed, to be restored, and to follow Him once again.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

Breath Prayer: (Inhale) Jesus, You restore what I thought was lost. (Exhale) I receive Your grace and walk forward in love.

How to Practice a Breath Prayer:

As you breathe in, picture yourself sitting with Jesus at the fire. As you exhale, release your shame and receive the restoration only He can give.

Practical Application

• Revisit the Fire. Read John 21 slowly, placing yourself in Peter’s shoes. What might Jesus want to restore in you today?

• Receive His Grace. Confess anything you’ve been holding in secret, and receive the full forgiveness of Christ.

• Renew Your Calling. Ask the Lord to show you how He might be inviting you to serve Him again, even from a place of failure.

Journal Prompt

What part of your story do you think disqualifies you? How does Jesus’ restoration of Peter speak to your own need for healing and purpose?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for meeting me with grace instead of condemnation. Thank You for preparing a place for me, even when I’ve fallen short. Help me to receive Your forgiveness fully and walk forward with renewed love and purpose. Restore what I’ve lost, and use my life for Your glory. Amen.

Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty

Grace doesn’t erase your story—it redeems it. Jesus meets you where you are, restores what’s broken, and calls you again: “Follow Me.”
