Scripture Focus
“At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, ‘Ask what I shall give you.’ And Solomon said, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.”
—1 Kings 3:5–10 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
God offers Solomon the chance to ask for anything—and Solomon asks for wisdom. In humility, he recognizes his weakness: “I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in.” This confession of dependence is the beginning of maturity.
Spiritual maturity is not measured by how much we know or control, but by our willingness to seek God’s wisdom in all things. James tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach” (James 1:5, ESV). Christ Himself is the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:24), and through Him we grow in discernment, humility, and right judgment.
Like Solomon, we are invited to admit our insufficiency and lean wholly on God. The mature heart prays first not for riches, ease, or recognition, but for wisdom to walk faithfully with Christ in every season.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Inhale: “Wisdom begins with humility.”
Exhale: “Christ is my wisdom.”
Breath Prayer
“Lord, give me wisdom to walk faithfully today.”
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
As you breathe in, pray: “Give me wisdom…”
As you exhale, pray: “…to walk faithfully today.”
Repeat this slowly, letting each breath remind you of your dependence on God’s guidance.
Practical Application
Begin your day with a short prayer asking specifically for wisdom in one decision or area of life.
Consider reading a chapter of Proverbs this week, noting how wisdom directs you toward maturity in Christ.
Journal Prompt
Where in my life am I most aware of my need for God’s wisdom? How can I ask Him for guidance with humility?
Closing Prayer
Father, I confess my need for Your wisdom. I am not sufficient in myself, but Christ is my wisdom and strength. Teach me to walk in humility, seek Your understanding, and discern what is good and true. Amen.
Invitation
This passage invites you to run with aim by seeking wisdom above all else. As Solomon asked for an understanding mind, so you are called to train for godliness by looking to Christ—the wisdom of God—to guide your steps.
