Wholehearted Devotion

Scripture Focus

“Then the king sent, and all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem were gathered to him. And the king went up to the house of the Lord, and with him all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the prophets, all the people, both small and great. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord. And the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people joined in the covenant.”

—2 Kings 23:1–3 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection

The Word had been rediscovered, and now it was proclaimed. Josiah gathers the entire nation—elders and commoners, priests and prophets, small and great—and the covenant is read aloud. But he does more than listen. He responds. Standing by the pillar, he pledges to walk after the Lord with all his heart and all his soul. The people follow.

This is maturity: when hearing God’s Word leads to wholehearted devotion. Josiah does not offer partial obedience, nor does he settle for private resolve. He leads a community to renew their covenant with God, shaping not only his own life but the life of the nation.

Wholehearted devotion is what God has always desired. The Shema declares: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:5). Jesus echoes this as the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37). To grow mature in Christ is to move from divided affections to single-hearted love.

This covenant finds its fulfillment in Jesus, who gave His whole heart and soul in obedience to the Father. Because of Him, we can walk in devotion not driven by fear but drawn by love.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

  • Inhale: “I will love You with all my heart.”

  • Exhale: “I will follow You with all my soul.”

Breath Prayer

“Lord, make my devotion whole and undivided.”

How to Practice a Breath Prayer:

As you breathe in, pray: “Make my devotion whole…”

As you breathe out, pray: “…and undivided.”

Let this become your quiet prayer throughout the day whenever distractions tug at your heart.

Practical Application

  • Reflect on where your devotion to Christ feels divided. Surrender one of those “competing loves” to Him in prayer.

  • Read Matthew 22:37–38 and journal how loving God with all your heart and soul could look practically in your daily rhythms.

Journal Prompt

Where is my devotion to Christ divided? What would it look like to walk after Him with all my heart and soul today?

Closing Prayer

Lord, I want to love You with all my heart, all my soul, and all my strength. Forgive me for divided devotion. Renew my covenant with You today, and shape my life to reflect wholehearted love for Christ. Amen.

Invitation

This passage invites you to run with aim by giving God your whole heart. Maturity in Christ is not partial obedience but wholehearted devotion that shapes every part of life.
