Scripture Focus:
“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned and said to him… ‘Rabboni!’ (which means Teacher).” John 20:16 (ESV)
When He Calls Your Name
Mary Magdalene stands outside the tomb weeping. Even after the resurrection, she does not recognize Jesus. She assumes He is the gardener. The grief is still too present, the moment too unexpected. She is looking directly at Him and still does not see.
Until He speaks her name: “Mary.”
Everything changes in that instant. Not because the situation has shifted, but because recognition has come. The voice of Jesus breaks through her grief, her assumptions, and her limited understanding. What she could not perceive with her eyes, she now knows in her heart.
This is often how resurrection works in our lives. We expect to recognize God through dramatic change, clear answers, or visible transformation. But sometimes He stands right in front of us — present, active, near — and we do not realize it until He speaks in a way that reaches us personally.
Isaiah 43:1 says, “I have called you by name, you are mine.” God’s relationship with us is not distant or general. It is personal. He knows us. He calls us. And when He does, it cuts through confusion and brings clarity.
Mary’s response is immediate: “Rabboni.” Recognition leads to relationship. Encounter leads to devotion. Resurrection is not only about new life. It is about knowing the One who gives it. And sometimes, everything shifts not when your situation changes —but when you realize He has been there all along.
Practice
Take a quiet moment and imagine Jesus speaking your name — not in correction, but in recognition and care.
Pray:“Jesus, help me recognize Your presence in my life.”
Reflection Question
Where might Jesus already be present in my life that I have not yet recognized?
