✨ Today’s Discipline | Solitude

Making Space to Enjoy Christ

Solitude is the practice of intentionally withdrawing from the noise of everyday life to enjoy unhurried fellowship with Jesus. It is not about escaping responsibilities or avoiding people. Rather, it is making space to remember that before we are servants of Christ, we are those who are loved by Him. Solitude allows us to step away from the demands of life and simply be with the One who has promised to never leave us.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus regularly withdrew to quiet places to pray. In Luke 5:15–16 (ESV), even as the crowds grew larger and the demands of ministry increased, "he would withdraw to desolate places and pray." Jesus' communion with the Father was not something He fit into His schedule—it was the source from which everything else flowed. In the same way, solitude reminds us that abiding with Christ is not a break from the Christian life; it is the heart of it.

Solitude forms affection for Christ by slowing us down enough to notice His presence. As the noise fades, we become aware of the thoughts, fears, desires, and distractions we often carry beneath the surface. Rather than hiding them, we bring them into the presence of Jesus. There we discover that He is patient, attentive, and sufficient. Solitude teaches us that our greatest need is not to accomplish more for Christ, but to know Him more deeply.

Guided Practice

Today, set aside 10–20 minutes to be alone with Jesus.

  • Find a quiet place where you can be free from interruptions.

  • Put away your phone and any other distractions.

  • Begin with this simple prayer:

"Jesus, I am here to be with You."

Then:

  • Read a short passage of Scripture slowly.

  • Sit quietly, becoming aware of Christ's presence.

  • Bring whatever is on your heart honestly before Him.

  • Resist the urge to rush or fill every moment with words.

  • Simply enjoy being with the One who delights in you.

Finish your time by thanking Jesus for welcoming you into His presence.

Pray:

"Lord Jesus, thank You that You desire my presence more than my performance. Quiet my heart, deepen my love for You, and teach me to delight in simply being with You. Let my time alone with You shape the way I live with You throughout the rest of this day."

Reflection Prompt

What happened in my heart as I slowed down to simply be with Christ, and what did I discover about His love and presence in the quiet?
