Quieting the Heart to Attend to Christ
Silence is not empty space; it is the place where Christ meets us without distraction. He is the Word who speaks, and yet He often draws us into stillness so we can truly hear Him. In Psalms 46:10 (ESV), the invitation is simple: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Silence is how we come to know—not just in thought, but in nearness.
When Elijah waited on God in 1 Kings 19, the Lord was not found in what was loud and overwhelming, but in a low whisper. Silence trains us to recognize that God’s presence is not absent when it is quiet. In Christ, we are not striving to be noticed; we are already seen, already known, already near to Him.
Silence exposes the restless places within us—the thoughts we rehearse, the noise we hide behind—but it does so in the presence of Christ, who is gentle and lowly in heart. As we remain with Him, the need to fill every moment begins to loosen. We learn to abide, not achieve. Silence becomes a way of resting with Christ as He holds all things together, including us.
Guided Practice
Today, enter into silence as a way of being with Christ.
Set aside 5–10 minutes (or longer if you’re able) and remove distractions.
Sit in a quiet place and take a few slow breaths
Gently bring your attention to the presence of Christ
If your mind wanders, return to a simple phrase like: “Jesus, You are here”
Do not try to control the moment. Let silence be what it is—space to be with Him.
If thoughts or emotions surface, bring them before Christ without rushing away. Remain with Him there.
Reflection Prompt
What did I notice about my heart in the quiet—and how did I experience Christ meeting me there?
