Reflecting the Self-Giving Love of Christ
Service is the practice of loving others through humble and intentional action because we have first been loved by Christ. Jesus did not use His power to exalt Himself, but to serve. In Philippians 2:5–7 (ESV), we are told to have the same mind as Christ, “who, though he was in the form of God… emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant.” Service forms us by shaping our hearts after His.
The love of Christ moves outward. Because we are secure in Him, we are free to notice and care for others without needing recognition or reward. Service teaches us to see people not as interruptions, but as neighbors entrusted to us by God. Often, the most formative acts are quiet and ordinary—listening well, offering encouragement, meeting practical needs, or choosing patience when it would be easier to withdraw.
Service also confronts self-centeredness by training us to live attentively and generously. Christ’s love becomes visible through small acts of faithfulness. As we serve others, we participate in His work and reflect His character to the world around us. In this way, service becomes both an act of love and a means of spiritual formation.
Guided Practice
Today, intentionally serve someone in a practical and sincere way.
Ask:
Who around me might need encouragement, care, or support today?
Choose one act of service:
Offer your full attention in conversation
Encourage someone specifically and sincerely
Help meet a practical need
Do something kind without seeking acknowledgment
Before serving, pray:
“Jesus, let Your love shape the way I care for others today.”
Serve quietly, allowing your actions to flow from gratitude for Christ’s love toward you.
Reflection Prompt
How did serving today help me reflect the heart of Christ—and what did it reveal about the way I see and love others?
