Participating in the Love of Christ
Service begins in Christ, who did not come to be served but to give Himself. His life is not merely an example—it is the very life we are invited into. In Mark 10:45 (ESV), Jesus reveals the shape of His mission: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” To serve is to participate in His self-giving love.
Because we are united to Christ, service is not driven by pressure or performance, but by His love at work within us. In John 13, Jesus washes His disciples’ feet and then calls them to do likewise. He does not send them to earn love, but to express the love they have received. Service flows from being loved by Him.
Service also forms us into the likeness of Christ. As we turn outward, we are freed from being consumed with ourselves. We begin to see others not as interruptions, but as neighbors entrusted to our care. In Christ, even the smallest act—seen or unseen—becomes significant, because it reflects His heart and participates in His work.
Guided Practice
Today, serve from your union with Christ.
Ask: Where is Christ inviting me to love someone today?
Choose one simple, intentional act:
Offer encouragement with sincerity and specificity
Meet a practical need with your time or resources
Give your full attention to someone without distraction
Before you act, pause and remember: I am loved by Christ, and I am free to love from that place.
Serve quietly, without seeking recognition. Let the act itself be your offering.
Reflection Prompt
How did serving today reveal the love of Christ—and how did it shape the way I saw others?
