Resting in the Finished Work of God
Sabbath is the practice of ceasing from striving in order to delight in God and trust His sustaining power. From the beginning, God established this rhythm in Genesis 2:2–3 (ESV), not because He needed rest, but to set a pattern for His people—a rhythm that reminds us we are sustained by Him, not by our own effort.
Sabbath reveals what we believe about God. In Exodus 16, God provides manna and instructs His people to rest on the seventh day, teaching them that provision does not come from constant labor, but from His faithful hand. To stop is an act of trust. It declares that God is at work, even when we are not.
In Christ, Sabbath becomes an invitation into deeper rest. Jesus says in Matthew 11:28 (ESV), “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” This rest is not only physical—it is spiritual. It is the quiet confidence that we are held, known, and sustained by God. Sabbath forms us into people who live from rest, not for it.
Guided Practice
Today, intentionally step into rest.
Set aside a portion of your day to cease from your usual work and rhythms of productivity.
Put away tasks, planning, and anything that feels like striving
Engage in what restores your awareness of God’s goodness—slow time outside, an unhurried meal, Scripture, or quiet stillness
Let your pace be gentle; resist the urge to make your rest productive
If your mind returns to what needs to be done, gently remind yourself: God is sustaining what I cannot control.
Close your Sabbath by thanking God for His provision, presence, and faithfulness.
Reflection Prompt
What does choosing to rest today reveal about what I believe God is responsible for—and what I believe I am responsible for?
