Scripture Focus
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.”
—Psalm 23 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Psalm 23 is often read in times of sorrow, but it is also a psalm of maturity. Notice how the psalmist moves from talking about God in verses 1–3 (“He leads me… He restores my soul”) to speaking to God in verse 4 (“for you are with me”). Mature faith rests not only in the gifts God provides but in His presence itself.
The Shepherd provides, leads, restores, and protects—but the greatest comfort is that He is with us. Even in the darkest valley, David’s confidence is not in the absence of trouble but in the presence of the Shepherd.
Jesus fulfills this psalm when He declares, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11, ESV). Our maturity grows as we learn to follow Him—not anxiously striving, but resting in His care. The Shepherd leads us to green pastures, even when the way winds through valleys.
To rest in the Shepherd’s care is not passivity; it is trust. It is the maturity of heart that believes goodness and mercy will surely follow because His covenant love never fails.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Inhale: “You are my Shepherd.”
Exhale: “I shall not want.”
Breath Prayer
“Jesus, my Shepherd, lead me into rest and trust.”
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
As you breathe in, pray: “Jesus, my Shepherd…”
As you exhale, pray: “…lead me into rest and trust.”
Repeat this slowly until your body and spirit rest in His presence.
Practical Application
Take a short walk today, repeating Psalm 23:1 as you breathe. Let it slow you down and remind you of the Shepherd’s care.
Write down three ways God has led you faithfully in this past season. Thank Him for His guidance and goodness.
Journal Prompt
What would it look like for me to rest more fully in Christ’s care instead of striving in my own strength?
Closing Prayer
Good Shepherd, I belong to You. Lead me, restore me, and teach me to rest in Your presence. Even when I walk through valleys, let me fear no evil, for You are with me. May my life overflow with Your goodness and mercy all the days of my life. Amen.
Invitation
This passage invites you to finish the race by learning to rest in the Shepherd’s care. Maturity in Christ is not frantic striving but trusting the One who leads, restores, and guards us every step of the way.
