Seek First the Kingdom

Matthew 6

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33 (ESV)

Devotional

Matthew 6 teaches us how life in the kingdom is sustained. Jesus speaks about giving, praying, fasting, treasure, and daily needs, and through it all He keeps drawing attention to the Father. The Christian life is not lived before a distant God who must be persuaded to care. It is lived before a Father who sees, knows, and provides.

That is what makes this chapter so steadying. Jesus warns against practicing righteousness for human notice and against piling up treasures that cannot last. He exposes how easily the heart can become divided, always searching for security in what is visible, measurable, and temporary. But then He turns and says, in essence, that the Father already knows what His children need. The answer to the restless heart is not greater control. It is deeper trust.

This comes into focus most clearly when Jesus speaks about anxiety. He does not mock it or treat it as insignificant. He goes beneath it. Anxiety often grows where the heart feels responsible to secure what only God can finally give. So Jesus lifts our eyes to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, not to shame us, but to remind us of the Father’s faithful care. If He clothes the grass and feeds the birds, how much more will He care for His children?

And this teaching is inseparable from Christ Himself. Jesus is not merely giving wise advice about mental peace. He is the Son who lives in perfect trust before the Father, and He brings us into that same relationship by grace. Through Him, we are not outsiders trying to survive on our own. We are children learning to live in the care of our Father. That is why seeking first the kingdom is not another burden to carry. It is the freeing reordering of life around the reign of God and the righteousness Christ gives.

So Matthew 6 teaches us that strength for the journey often looks like daily dependence. Daily bread. Daily prayer. Daily trust. The Father who sees in secret is the Father who knows your need before you ask. In Christ, you are free to stop building your life around anxious striving and to receive again the peace of belonging to Him. Seek first the kingdom, and let the Father hold what you cannot.
