Put On the Lord Jesus Christ
Scripture
“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” —Romans 13:14 ESV
Devotional
Paul describes the Christian life with the image of getting dressed. To “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” is to let His character increasingly become visible in the way we think, desire, speak, and act. We already belong to Christ through grace, and now the Spirit is teaching us to live in a way that agrees with the new identity we have received in Him.
This also means becoming attentive to what feeds desires that pull us away from Jesus. Paul tells believers to make no provision for the flesh because our habits matter. What we repeatedly expose ourselves to, excuse, entertain, or rehearse can strengthen desires that resist the life of Christ within us. Formation happens through these ordinary patterns long before they become dramatic decisions.
Putting on Christ therefore involves both surrender and practice. We bring our desires under His lordship, turn away from what keeps nourishing sin, and choose patterns that help us remain attentive to His presence and truth. Scripture, prayer, repentance, worship, community, and obedience become ways the Spirit trains our hearts to respond more naturally in the direction of Jesus.
The aim is not to manufacture a more spiritual version of ourselves. It is to become increasingly recognizable as people who belong to Christ. His compassion, holiness, humility, courage, and love begin to shape our ordinary lives as we offer ourselves to Him again and again.
Reflection Question
What habit or pattern has been feeding desires that pull you away from Christ, and what could help you become more attentive to Him instead?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, I belong to You. Clothe my life with Your character today. Show me where my habits are feeding desires that draw me away from You, and give me grace to turn from them. Holy Spirit, train my thoughts, affections, and choices so that the life of Christ becomes increasingly visible in me. Let what I practice form me toward Jesus, and make my ordinary life reflect the One I have been united to. Amen.
