Overcome Evil with Good
Scripture
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” —Romans 12:21 ESV
Devotional
Jesus shows us what it means to refuse evil without becoming shaped by it. He was mocked without returning insult, rejected without abandoning love, and crucified while praying for His enemies. At the cross, evil appeared to have won, yet Christ defeated it through faithful obedience, self-giving love, and ultimately His resurrection.
Paul calls believers into that same pattern. When we are wounded, our instinct may be to repay what we received—to become colder, harsher, more defensive, or more resentful. Evil wins more than once when another person’s sin begins forming our character. Christ offers another way. Because we belong to Him, their actions do not get to determine who we become.
Overcoming evil with good does not mean pretending harm is harmless or refusing necessary boundaries. It means entrusting justice to God while allowing the Spirit to form the response of Jesus within us. We can speak truth without hatred, establish boundaries without revenge, forgive without calling evil good, and continue pursuing what honors Christ.
The resurrection assures us that the way of Jesus is not weakness. His goodness has already overcome the darkest evil humanity could produce. As His life is formed in us, we become people whose responses testify that sin will not have the final word. Christ will.
Reflection Question
Where are you tempted to let someone else’s actions determine the kind of person you become?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, You overcame evil through holy, courageous, self-giving love. Guard my heart from becoming shaped by the hurt, anger, or resentment I have received from others. Give me wisdom to name what is wrong, courage to establish healthy boundaries where needed, and grace to entrust justice to You. Holy Spirit, form the character of Christ in my responses so that evil does not reproduce itself through me. Let Your goodness have the final word. Amen.
