Living From Approval, Not For It

Scripture Focus

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

— Galatians 1:10 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection

The source of our approval determines the direction of our calling. Scripture makes a clear distinction between living to gain approval and living from the approval already secured in Christ. The difference reshapes motivation, confidence, and obedience.

In Galatians 1:10, Paul addresses the tension directly. He refuses to shape his message around human acceptance because his allegiance is anchored in God. His identity as a servant of Christ governs his decisions. Approval from others cannot be the driving force if obedience to God is the aim.

When approval becomes something we chase, calling grows unstable. Decisions are filtered through perception rather than conviction. We adjust our obedience to protect reputation or avoid disapproval. But when identity is rooted in Christ, approval is no longer something to earn; it is something already given through the gospel.

Living from approval does not produce indifference toward others. It produces clarity. We are free to love and serve without reshaping our calling to secure affirmation. The gospel declares that we are accepted in Christ; obedience becomes an expression of gratitude rather than a strategy for validation.

To live from approval is to trust that God’s verdict over your life is settled. That settled identity steadies your steps.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

Breath Prayer:

Inhale: I am accepted in Christ.

Exhale: I seek to please You.

How to Practice a Breath Prayer:

Sit quietly and breathe slowly. With each inhale, receive the assurance of acceptance in Christ. With each exhale, release the need for human approval. Continue for several minutes.

Practical Application

Before making a decision today, pause and ask: Is this shaped by conviction or by the desire to be approved? Let your identity in Christ clarify your response.

Journal Prompt

Where has the pursuit of approval influenced my obedience, and how would living from Christ’s acceptance change my direction?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You that my acceptance is secure in Christ. Guard my heart from seeking approval in ways that compromise obedience. Align my motives with Your will and steady my calling in Your truth. Amen.

Invitation

Training for godliness produces conviction grounded in identity. Run with aim today, living from the approval secured in Christ.
