Live to the Lord
Scripture
“For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” —Romans 14:8 ESV
Devotional
Paul writes Romans 14 to believers who disagreed about food, sacred days, and matters of conscience. His answer reaches beneath the disagreement to a deeper question: Who does your life belong to? Every believer stands before Christ. He is Lord over our convictions, choices, relationships, and the way we treat people whose conclusions differ from our own.
To say “we live to the Lord” means that Jesus becomes the reference point for ordinary decisions. We learn to ask whether our choices honor Him, whether our convictions are rooted in faith, and whether our freedom is being exercised with love. Christ’s lordship reaches into the details because no part of life sits outside His care.
This also changes how we relate to other believers. Jesus has received them, just as He has received us. We can hold convictions seriously while remembering that Christ remains their Master. Humility grows when we recognize that each of us lives before the same Lord, depends on the same grace, and will ultimately answer to Him.
Paul’s final grounding is deeply secure: “we are the Lord’s.” Jesus purchased us through His death and resurrection, and our lives now belong to Him completely. Living to the Lord grows from that belonging. We can release the pressure to control every outcome or every person because Christ is Lord, and we are already His.
Reflection Question
Where might remembering “I am the Lord’s” change the way you approach a decision, conviction, or relationship today?
Guided Prayer
Jesus, my life belongs to You. Let Your lordship shape the way I think, choose, speak, and relate to others. Give me humility where I have become rigid, wisdom where I need discernment, and love where disagreement has created distance. Holy Spirit, train me to live consciously before Christ in the ordinary details of my day. Keep me secure in this truth: I am Yours. Amen.
