Lent Day 39 | What He Clears, He Restores

Scripture Focus:

Matthew 21:12–13 (ESV)

“And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple… He said to them, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers.’”

What He Clears, He Restores

On Monday of Holy Week, Jesus does not move quietly. He enters the temple and begins to overturn what does not belong. Tables are flipped. Space is reclaimed. What had become crowded and distorted is brought back into alignment.

This moment can feel startling, but it reveals something essential about the heart of Christ. His love does not ignore disorder. It addresses it. The temple was meant to be a place of prayer, a space for communion with God. Yet over time, it had been filled with noise, transaction, and misplaced priorities. And Jesus refuses to leave it that way.

What He does in the temple, He also does in us.

Paul writes, “You are God’s temple” (1 Corinthians 3:16, ESV). The presence of God is not distant — it dwells within His people. And because of that, Jesus is not indifferent to what fills our inner lives. When distractions, habits, or attachments begin to take up space meant for Him, He does not withdraw. He moves in.

This is not rejection.

It is restoration.

Holy Week begins with this kind of clarity. Before the cross, before the sacrifice, Jesus clears the space. Not to leave emptiness, but to make room for true worship. What He removes is never what sustains you. What He restores is what brings life.

He does not clear to condemn.

He clears to reclaim.

Practice

Ask the Lord to gently reveal anything that has been crowding your heart — something that has taken up more space than it should.

Pray:

“Jesus, clear what does not belong, and restore what leads me to You.”

Reflection Question

What might Jesus be inviting me to release so that my life becomes a place of prayer again?
