Leaving Yesterday Behind: Moving Forward with Philippians 3:13-14

Scripture Focus

"Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)

Devotional Reflection

The past can feel like a heavy anchor, tethering us to regret, disappointment, or even past successes that tempt us to rest on yesterday’s achievements. Paul’s words in Philippians 3:13-14 call us to a radical act of faith: to leave what lies behind and press forward toward what God has prepared for us.

Paul’s example is striking. A man who once persecuted the church now dedicates his life to advancing the gospel. He could have been consumed by guilt over his past or grown complacent in his accomplishments as an apostle. Yet, he chooses instead to focus on the future—God’s calling and the eternal prize awaiting him in Christ.

This same invitation is extended to us. Letting go of the past doesn’t mean denying its existence but refusing to let it define us. Through Christ, our failures are forgiven, our hurts are redeemed, and our purpose is renewed. As we press on, we can rest in the assurance that God is shaping us, not by our past but by His eternal plans for us.

Today, release what is holding you back and fix your eyes on the path ahead. Christ calls you forward—not to strive in your own strength but to walk in His grace toward the life He has prepared for you.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

Breath Prayer: (Inhale) “I press forward in faith…”(Exhale) “…letting go of the past.”

How to Practice a Breath Prayer: Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably and take a few deep breaths to settle your mind. As you inhale, silently pray the first part of the phrase (e.g., “I press forward in faith…”), and as you exhale, pray the second part (e.g., “…letting go of the past.”). Repeat the prayer slowly for 2–5 minutes, letting the rhythm of your breathing guide your focus. This simple practice helps center your heart on God’s presence and truth.

Practical Application

As you reflect on this truth, take time to ask yourself:

How can you actively pursue God’s call in your life today, trusting Him for what’s ahead?

Write down one specific way you will “press on” today—whether it’s spending time in prayer, taking a step toward a God-given goal, or surrendering something that’s been weighing you down. Commit this to God in prayer.

Journal Prompt:

What is one thing from your past that you feel God is inviting you to release? How can letting go help you move forward in faith?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me forward into Your plans and purposes. Help me to release the things in my past that hold me back from fully trusting You. Teach me to press on in faith, fixing my eyes on You and the prize of eternal life in Christ. Strengthen me for the journey ahead, and may I walk each step in Your grace. Amen.
