Scripture Focus
“And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out.”
— Mark 3:14 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Christian calling begins with following before it extends to sending. Scripture consistently shows that formation precedes commission. God does not send people into purpose without first drawing them into relationship.
In Mark 3:14, Jesus appoints the twelve with a clear order: first, that they might be with Him; second, that He might send them out. Presence comes before platform. Relationship precedes responsibility. The disciples are not defined initially by what they will accomplish, but by proximity to Christ.
This order guards us from misunderstanding calling. When being sent is emphasized without being formed, purpose becomes detached from communion. We begin to measure calling by visible activity rather than inward transformation. But Jesus establishes a different pattern. He trains His disciples through shared life before entrusting them with mission.
Following shapes the kind of people we become. It orders our desires, clarifies our character, and aligns our motives. When sending eventually comes, it flows from what has already been cultivated in relationship with Christ.
To follow before being sent is not delay; it is preparation. Identity deepens in proximity to Jesus, and calling grows out of that depth.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Keep me near, Lord.
Exhale: Lead me where You will.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer:
Sit quietly and slow your breathing. With each inhale, acknowledge your nearness to Christ. With each exhale, release urgency about outcomes. Continue for several minutes.
Practical Application
Before focusing today on tasks or goals, spend intentional time in Scripture or prayer. Let following shape your direction before you move into action.
Journal Prompt
Where have I been more concerned with being sent than with being formed, and how is God inviting me to deepen my following first?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to remain near to You. Shape my heart through following so that when You send me, I move in alignment with Your will. Form my identity in Your presence. Amen.
Invitation
Training for godliness begins with staying close to Christ. Run with aim today, remembering that your sending flows from your following.
