Clinging to the Lord

Scripture Focus

“Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah. And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that David his father had done. He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it (it was called Nehushtan).

He trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel, so that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah after him, nor among those who were before him. For he held fast to the Lord. He did not depart from following him, but kept the commandments that the Lord commanded Moses. And the Lord was with him; wherever he went out, he prospered.”

—2 Kings 18:1–7 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection

Hezekiah’s story begins with reform. He tears down idols, dismantles altars, and even destroys the bronze serpent Moses once lifted in the wilderness—a good thing turned into an object of false worship. His devotion was not partial; he “held fast to the Lord” and “did not depart.”

Maturity in Christ often looks like this kind of holy clinging. To cling is to hold tightly, refusing to let go even when the current of culture pulls the other way. Hezekiah’s trust was not casual but tenacious. And the result? God was with him.

This is the invitation for us: to cling to Christ. Jesus says, “Abide in me, and I in you” (John 15:4, ESV). Paul exhorts believers, “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good” (Romans 12:9, ESV). Maturity is found in this steady grip—tearing down the idols of our own hearts and holding fast to the Lord who never lets go of us.

The world promises easier things to cling to—comfort, recognition, self-sufficiency. But none of these endure. To grow mature is to cling to the Lord through both reform and resistance, through obedience and endurance. His presence is our prosperity, and His faithfulness is our strength.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

  • Inhale: “I will hold fast to the Lord.”

  • Exhale: “He will never let me go.”

Breath Prayer

“Lord, help me cling to You with steadfast faith.”

How to Practice a Breath Prayer:

As you breathe in, pray: “Help me cling to You…”

As you exhale, pray: “…with steadfast faith.”

Use this prayer in moments when you feel tempted to loosen your grip on obedience.

Practical Application

  • Identify one “high place” in your own life—something that distracts or competes for your devotion. Ask God for courage to remove it.

  • Read John 15:4–5 and spend time reflecting on what it means to “abide” in Christ.

Journal Prompt

What idols or distractions am I tempted to cling to instead of Christ? What would it look like to hold fast to Him with all my heart?

Closing Prayer

Lord, You are my stronghold and my salvation. Give me courage to remove what draws me away and to cling to You in steadfast faith. Thank You that even as I hold fast to You, You hold me more securely still. Amen.

Invitation

This passage invites you to finish the race by clinging to Christ. Maturity in Him is not wavering loyalty but steadfast devotion, holding tightly to the One who never loosens His grip on you.
