1 Peter 5
“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)
Devotional
1 Peter 5 calls us into the strength of humility. Peter exhorts the church to clothe themselves with it, to take the low place before God and one another, and to trust that the Lord gives grace there. Humility is not a diminished view of our worth, but a right view of God. It is the posture that knows He is God and we are safely held in His hands.
That is why Peter moves so naturally into this invitation: “casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” Anxiety and humility are more connected than they first appear. Anxiety keeps trying to carry what was never meant to rest on our shoulders. Humility releases that burden into the hands of God. It acknowledges that He is more able to govern our lives than we are.
This tenderness is grounded in the character of God Himself. Peter does not merely say that God is strong enough to carry our concerns, though He is. He says, “he cares for you.” The Lord’s power is personal. His sovereignty is not cold. His care is not general or distant. In Christ, the heart of God toward His people has been made unmistakably clear. Jesus laid down His life for His sheep, and even now He remains the Chief Shepherd who keeps, guards, and tends His own.
Peter does not deny the reality of spiritual conflict or suffering. He tells believers to be watchful, because the adversary is real. He reminds them that suffering is part of the Christian life in this fallen world. But even that is framed by hope: “the God of all grace… will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” The final action belongs to God. He Himself will do it.
So 1 Peter 5 teaches us to live with open hands before the Lord. We do not need to grip every fear, manage every outcome, or secure our own future. We are invited to cast our anxieties on the God who cares for us and to trust the Shepherd who will faithfully bring His people through.
Reflection Prompt
What anxiety am I still carrying as though it depends on me, and what would it look like to truly cast it on God today because He cares for me?

I’ve noticed I carry the anxiety of “what if” a few weeks ago one of my relationships wasn’t going well and when then person reached out… I didn’t respond well. Now weeks later I’m still anxious about the what if… would things be different if I responded differently?
Letting it go and casting it on God would look like trusting that he really is in control and has a plan even in our mistakes. It also looks like praying for his kingdom to come and will to be done in every situation 💛
