Matthew 7
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24 (ESV)
Devotional
Matthew 7 brings Jesus’ teaching to a searching and necessary conclusion. After speaking about life in His kingdom, He now presses the question of response. What will we do with His words? The chapter holds together warning, invitation, discernment, and promise, all moving toward the final image of two builders. Both hear. Both build. Both face the storm. But only one stands.
That is what makes the passage so weighty. Jesus does not describe strength as appearances, religious language, or good intentions. He describes it as a life built on His words. The wise builder is not the one with the easiest circumstances, but the one whose foundation is secure. When rain falls, floods rise, and winds beat, the house stands because it is founded on the rock.
This chapter is filled with the kindness of Christ. He tells His people to ask, seek, and knock. He assures them that the Father gives good gifts. He warns them about false appearances and empty professions. And then He gathers it all into this central call: hear Him and live on what He says. Jesus is not offering one voice among many. He speaks with the authority of the King, and His words are meant to become the foundation of a life.
And this foundation is not merely abstract teaching. It is Christ Himself. To build on His words is to build on the one who speaks them. He is the rock beneath the house. He is the obedient Son, the giver of wisdom, and the sure foundation who does not fail in the storm. Strength for the journey is not found in avoiding wind and rain. It is found in being anchored to Christ, trusting His voice, and ordering life around Him.
So Matthew 7 teaches us that hearing Jesus is never meant to end at admiration. His words are for building with. The journey will include pressure, testing, and exposure, but the one who belongs to Christ and builds on Him will stand. The rock is not fragile. His words are not unstable. And those who entrust their lives to Him are not building in vain.
Reflection Prompt
What part of my life is Christ inviting me to build more firmly on His words today so that I can stand steady when pressure comes?
