A Star Shall Come Out of Jacob

Scripture

Numbers 24

“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.” — Numbers 24:17 (ESV)

Devotional

Numbers 24 is striking because blessing comes from the mouth of someone hired to curse. Balak wanted Balaam to speak ruin over God’s people, but the Lord would not allow it. Again and again, God turns intended cursing into blessing. The chapter reminds us that what God has purposed cannot be overturned by human schemes, hostile powers, or fearful circumstances. His word stands.

But the deepest beauty of the chapter is found in Balaam’s final oracle: “a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.” Even here, in the wilderness and in the midst of opposition, God gives a glimpse of the coming King. The promise reaches beyond Israel’s immediate situation and points forward to Christ—the true ruler who would arise from His people, not merely to defeat earthly enemies, but to conquer sin, death, and the powers of darkness.

This means Numbers 24 is not mainly about Balaam, Balak, or even Israel’s safety in that moment. It is about the faithfulness of God to bring forth His promised King. Christ is the star who has come, the scepter who rules in righteousness. He is the one no curse can overcome and no enemy can dethrone. In Him, the blessing of God is secured for His people.

That matters for us because there are still moments when life feels opposed, uncertain, or threatened by forces beyond our control. But Numbers 24 teaches us to read those moments through the larger certainty of God’s promise. The Lord is not improvising. He is not vulnerable to interruption. He has given His Son, and in His Son His purposes are moving steadily forward.

So today, do not fix your attention only on what rises against you. Lift your eyes to the King who has already come. Christ is God’s unshakable yes to His promises. No curse can nullify what He has secured. No darkness can extinguish His reign. The star has risen, and the scepter belongs to Him.

Reflection Prompt

Where am I more aware of opposition, uncertainty, or fear than I am of Christ’s unshakable rule, and how is God inviting me to trust His promises more deeply today?
