Worthy Is the Lamb

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” — Revelation 5:12 (ESV)

Revelation 5 begins with a crisis in heaven. A scroll lies in the right hand of the One seated on the throne, but no one is found worthy to open it. John begins to weep because if no one can open the scroll, then the purposes of God for judgment, redemption, and the fulfillment of history remain closed. The moment is heavy with longing: who is worthy?

Then comes the answer. “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered.” But when John looks, he does not first see a lion in strength. He sees “a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain.” This is the glory at the center of the chapter: Christ conquers as the Lamb. His worthiness is bound to His sacrifice. He is able to open the scroll because He has accomplished redemption through His blood.

This means the center of heaven’s worship is not merely Christ’s power, but Christ crucified and risen. “For you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God.” The Lamb is worthy because He gave Himself. He did not secure redemption from a distance. He entered suffering, bore sin, and purchased a people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. The throne and the cross belong together.

And once the Lamb takes the scroll, heaven erupts in worship. The elders fall down. The angels cry out. Every creature joins the song. The universe is being drawn into the praise of the One who is worthy. Revelation 5 shows us that history is not moving toward meaninglessness, but toward the public honor of Christ. The Lamb who was slain is the Lord who reigns.

So this chapter invites us to let our lives be reoriented around His worthiness. Christ is not simply useful to us, though He is our Savior in every way. He is worthy of all worship, all allegiance, all trust, and all love. The deepest answer to the restless heart is not merely help from Jesus, but a clearer vision of His beauty. Worthy is the Lamb. And when the heart sees Him rightly, worship becomes its proper response.
