When We Follow Ourselves

Scripture Focus
“In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” – Judges 21:25 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
The final verse of Judges is both a summary and a warning. Without a true King to follow, everyone chose their own way. And it wasn’t freedom they found—it was destruction, division, and deep sorrow.
There are seasons when it feels easier to trust ourselves than God. When grief hardens into suspicion, when unanswered prayers echo too loudly, when disappointment seems safer than hope—we start to do what’s right in our own eyes.
But self-reliance is a quiet thief. It whispers that we’ll be safer in control, but leaves us empty. God’s goodness doesn’t always follow our logic, but it never fails. He is the kind of King who restores what’s been broken, gathers what’s been scattered, and loves us back to trust.
Following Him means surrendering what seems right to us and choosing what is true in Him.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Even when your trust has been worn thin, Jesus is still a better King than your own understanding.
Breath Prayer
Inhale: “Lead me in truth…”
Exhale: “…I release my own way.”
Practical Application
Notice today where you’re relying on yourself—your plans, your understanding, your timeline. Invite God to speak into one of those places and ask: Am I doing what is right in my own eyes, or what is good in Yours?
Journal Prompt
Where have I been following myself instead of trusting God? What is one small act of surrender I can offer today?
Closing Prayer
Lord, You are a faithful and good King. Forgive me for the times I’ve trusted myself more than You. I want to walk in Your ways, not just my own. Lead me in truth, and teach me again that Your path is the one worth following. Amen.
Invitation to Live with Truth, Goodness, and Beauty
True freedom is found not in doing what seems right to us, but in following the One who is always faithful.
