Love That Moves Toward Us
Scripture Focus — John 3:16–17 (ESV)
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Devotional Reflection
Advent love begins with God’s movement toward us. John does not describe a love that waits for improvement, understanding, or worthiness. He describes a love that gives. God’s love is active, costly, and purposeful. It moves outward, crossing the distance between heaven and earth to bring life where there was once separation.
This love does not arrive as an abstract idea. It takes on flesh. It enters history. It steps into a broken world not to condemn it, but to redeem it. Advent reminds us that God’s love is not reactive—it is intentional. He sends His Son not because the world deserved saving, but because love compelled Him to act. Love initiates before it is received, before it is returned, before it is even recognized.
For many of us, love feels conditional. We are accustomed to earning approval, proving ourselves, or withholding affection until trust feels safe. Advent interrupts that pattern. God’s love moves first. It meets us where we are and invites us into relationship, healing, and restoration. This love does not minimize sin or suffering, but it refuses to let either have the final word. Christ comes because love insists on redemption.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
Breath Prayer
Inhale: Your love comes toward me.
Exhale: I receive Your gift.
How to Practice a Breath Prayer
When feelings of unworthiness or distance from God arise today, pause and breathe slowly. Let this prayer remind you that God’s love moves toward you, not away from you.
Practical Application
Consider one way God has moved toward you in love—through Scripture, provision, forgiveness, or presence. Spend a few moments thanking Him for that specific gift.
Journal Prompt
Where do you struggle to believe that God’s love moves toward you rather than waiting for you to get it right? How does John 3:16–17 challenge that belief?
Closing Prayer
God of love, thank You for loving me enough to come near. Teach me to receive Your love without fear or hesitation. Let Your self-giving love shape how I see You, myself, and the world You came to redeem. Amen.
