Treasure These Things

Scripture Focus — Luke 2:19 (ESV)

“But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”

Devotional Reflection

While others marveled aloud at the angels’ words and the shepherds’ story, Mary responded differently. She listened. She remembered. She held the moments close. Luke tells us that Mary “treasured” what was happening and “pondered” it in her heart, suggesting a deep, intentional attentiveness to God’s work unfolding around her. Joy, for Mary, was not loud or immediate. It was formed slowly through reflection.

This kind of joy grows in the quiet. It does not rush to conclusions or demand instant clarity. Instead, it lingers with mystery, trusting that God is at work even when understanding is incomplete. Mary’s posture reminds us that joy can be cultivated through patience and presence. By treasuring what God is doing—however small or confusing it may seem—we allow our hearts to be shaped by gratitude and trust rather than anxiety or haste.

Advent invites us into this same rhythm. In a season full of activity and noise, we are invited to slow down and pay attention. When we pause to reflect on God’s faithfulness, we begin to see His hand in places we might otherwise overlook. Joy deepens not because life becomes simpler, but because our hearts become more attentive. Mary’s example teaches us that joy is often found not in doing more, but in noticing more.

Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust

Breath Prayer

Inhale: I treasure Your work.

Exhale: I trust what You are doing.

How to Practice a Breath Prayer

When you feel hurried or overstimulated today, pause for a slow breath. Let this prayer draw your attention back to God’s presence and help you hold the moment with gentleness.

Practical Application

At the end of the day, write down three moments where you noticed God’s presence—however ordinary or brief. Let this practice of treasuring deepen your awareness of His faithfulness.

Journal Prompt

What might God be inviting you to treasure in this season? How could slowing down help you notice His work more clearly?

Closing Prayer

Lord, teach me to treasure what You are doing in my life, even when I do not fully understand it. Help me to slow down, reflect, and hold Your work with gratitude and trust. Let joy grow quietly in my heart as I learn to attend to Your presence. Amen.

Invitation to train for godliness, run with aim, and finish the race.

Joy deepens through attentiveness. Keep running with a heart that notices, remembers, and trusts the God who is faithfully at work.
