Treasure in Jars of Clay

“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.”—2 Corinthians 4:6–7 ESV

Devotional

Paul describes the gospel as a treasure placed inside jars of clay—ordinary, fragile vessels carrying something infinitely valuable. The treasure is the knowledge of God’s glory revealed in Jesus Christ. In Christ, we see what God is like: holy and merciful, just and gracious, powerful enough to conquer death and loving enough to give Himself for sinners. God has shone this truth into our hearts with the same creative power that first commanded light into darkness.

The jar, however, remains fragile. Paul knew weakness, suffering, confusion, and pressure. Later in the chapter he says he was afflicted, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down. His hardships did not mean Christ had abandoned him or that his ministry had failed. They made something unmistakably clear: the power sustaining him could not have originated in him. His limitations became the backdrop against which the life of Jesus was made visible.

We often assume we would serve Christ better if we were stronger, more confident, less limited, or further along. Yet God has intentionally placed His treasure in fragile people. Our weakness can free us from needing to appear sufficient and teach us to depend more deeply on the sufficiency of Christ. The aim is never for people to marvel at the vessel. It is for them to encounter the treasure.

This is why Paul can later say, “We do not lose heart.” Even while the outer self wastes away, God is renewing the inner self and preparing an eternal weight of glory beyond comparison. What feels fragile now is held within a story that ends in resurrection. Christ is present in our weakness, His life is at work within us, and His glory remains the treasure worth carrying.

Where have you been treating your weakness as a reason Christ cannot use you, and how might it instead become a place where His power is more clearly seen?

Guided Prayer

Jesus, You are the treasure within this fragile life. Thank You for revealing the glory of God and shining Your light into my heart. I confess the ways I have wanted to appear strong, capable, or sufficient in myself. Teach me to bring my limitations to You without shame and to depend upon Your power within them. Let Your life become visible through me, and when others see anything good, faithful, or beautiful in my life, may the glory return to You. Keep renewing me inwardly and fix my eyes on the eternal glory You have promised. Amen.
