Scripture Focus

—Psalm 37:4 (ESV)
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
—Matthew 6:21 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
Spiritual formation always reaches deeper than behavior. It moves beneath what we do and addresses what we love. Scripture makes this clear: discipleship is not only about obedience, but about desire. Over time, we become like what we treasure.
Discipline does not suppress desire; it trains it. Left unattended, our loves are shaped by habit, culture, and convenience. But when we intentionally place ourselves before God—through prayer, Scripture, stillness, and obedience—our desires begin to shift. What once competed for our attention slowly loses its hold. What once felt distant begins to draw us closer.
The psalmist’s invitation to delight in the Lord is not transactional. God does not promise to grant every passing wish. Instead, He reshapes the heart itself. As we delight in Him, our desires are refined, aligned, and reordered. Over time, we begin to want what leads us nearer to God.
This work is gentle and patient. Desire is not changed through force, but through presence. Discipline keeps us close enough for God to do this deeper work—forming our loves so that obedience flows from joy rather than pressure.
Today, discipline looks like honesty. Paying attention to what you long for. Bringing those desires before God without fear or correction. Trusting that as you remain near Him, He is faithfully shaping your heart.
Inhale Truth, Exhale Trust
God forms my desires as I remain near Him.
Breath Prayer
Inhale: “Shape my heart, O God.”
Exhale: “Teach me to delight in You.”
How to Practice a Breath Prayer
Sit quietly and bring your attention to your breath. As you inhale, pray the first phrase slowly. As you exhale, pray the second. Allow the prayer to open your awareness to what you love and long for, resting those desires before God. Continue for two to three minutes.
Practical Application
Notice what you are most drawn toward today—your thoughts, your attention, your anticipation. Without judgment, offer these desires to God in prayer. Ask Him to gently shape what you love toward what brings life and nearness to Him.
Journal Prompt
What do my daily habits reveal about what I treasure? How might God be inviting me to trust Him with the shaping of my desires?
Closing Prayer
God, You know my heart more fully than I do. Shape my desires through Your presence, and teach me to delight in You above all else. Form my loves so that my life reflects Yours. Amen.
Invitation
Disciples are formed at the level of love. As we train for godliness, let us run with aim—trusting God to shape our desires and draw our hearts more fully toward Him.
