Responding to the Worthiness of Christ

Worship begins with seeing God rightly. Before it is a song we sing or an activity we participate in, worship is our response to who God is. Our attention is constantly being drawn toward things that promise security, significance, comfort, or satisfaction. Worship deliberately redirects that attention toward the One who alone deserves our ultimate love and allegiance.

In Revelation 5:12, heaven resounds with the declaration, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain” (ESV). At the center of Christian worship stands Jesus—the Lamb who gave Himself for us and now reigns victorious. We do not worship God primarily because of what we hope He will do next. We worship because of who He is and what He has already accomplished through Christ. The cross and resurrection give us reason to praise even when our circumstances have not changed.

Worship also reorders us. As we proclaim God’s holiness, faithfulness, power, mercy, and love, the things competing for our devotion are placed back into their proper position. Our problems may remain real, but they are no longer ultimate.

Our desires still matter, but they no longer determine whether God is worthy. Worship lifts our eyes beyond ourselves and reminds us that the Christian life is ultimately about the glory of God. We were created, redeemed, and are being formed into a people whose lives declare that Christ is worthy.

Guided Practice

Set aside a few minutes today to worship God without beginning with your needs or requests.

Choose one attribute of God—His holiness, goodness, faithfulness, mercy, sovereignty, wisdom, or love—and focus your attention there.

Then:

  • Find a Scripture that reveals that aspect of God’s character.

  • Read it slowly and turn its words into praise.

  • Name specific reasons Christ is worthy of your worship.

  • Sing or listen to a worship song and give it your full attention.

  • Notice anything that has been occupying an outsized place in your thoughts and intentionally place it beneath the lordship of Christ.

For a few moments, resist asking God for anything. Simply tell Him who He is and thank Him for what He has done.

Pray:

“Lord Jesus, You are worthy of my worship. Lift my eyes above everything competing for my attention and remind me again of who You are. Reorder my loves, steady my heart, and teach me to live today in a way that reflects Your worth. May my thoughts, words, choices, and desires become an offering of praise to You.”
