✨ Today’s Discipline | Solitude

Abiding with Christ in the Quiet

Solitude is the practice of intentionally stepping away from the noise of life to be alone with Christ. It is not about escaping responsibilities or withdrawing from people out of isolation. Rather, it is creating space where our attention is no longer divided and our hearts can simply enjoy the presence of God. Before solitude becomes a place of listening, it is first a place of abiding.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus regularly withdrew from the crowds to be with the Father. In Mark 1:35 (ESV), we read, “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.” Though His ministry was filled with constant demands, Jesus never allowed His communion with the Father to become secondary. Solitude was not an escape from His calling—it was where His calling was continually rooted.

Solitude forms intimacy because it reminds us that God desires our presence before our productivity. In the quiet, we become aware of the thoughts, worries, and desires that are often hidden beneath our busyness. Rather than pushing them away, we bring them honestly before Christ. There we discover that He is neither hurried nor distant. He welcomes us, meets us with grace, and gently teaches us to rest in His love. As we learn to be with Christ, we find that His presence is enough.

Guided Practice

Today, intentionally set aside 10–20 minutes to be alone with Christ.

  • Find a quiet place free from interruptions.

  • Set aside your phone and other distractions.

  • Begin with this simple prayer:

"Jesus, I am here to be with You."

Then:

  • Sit quietly and become aware of His presence.

  • Read a short passage of Scripture slowly.

  • If distractions arise, gently return your attention to Christ.

  • Bring any worries or joys before Him without rushing.

  • End your time by thanking Him simply for being with you.

Remember, the goal is not to have a profound experience—it is to faithfully enjoy the presence of the One who has promised never to leave you.

Pray:

"Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me to abide with You. Quiet my restless heart, draw me near to Yourself, and teach me to delight in Your presence above every distraction. Let this time with You shape the rest of my day."

Reflection Prompt

What happened in my heart when I intentionally slowed down to be with Christ, and how did His presence bring peace, clarity, or renewed affection for Him?
