Letting Christ Meet You Beneath the Noise

Solitude is the practice of intentionally stepping away from people, noise, and activity to be alone with Christ. It is not isolation, nor is it simply finding somewhere quiet. Solitude creates space where we can stop responding to everyone and everything around us long enough to become attentive to the One who is already present.

Jesus practiced this rhythm throughout His ministry. Luke 5:16 (ESV) tells us, “But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” The demands surrounding Jesus were real—people needed healing, teaching, and care—yet He repeatedly withdrew to commune with the Father. His solitude reminds us that constant availability is not the same thing as faithfulness. We were created to live from communion with God, not from an endless response to demands.

Solitude also brings us face-to-face with what busyness can conceal. When the notifications stop and there is no one to impress, help, entertain, or respond to, we may notice anxiety, loneliness, disappointment, ambition, or exhaustion beneath the surface. These discoveries are not interruptions to solitude; they are often part of its gift. We can bring our unedited selves before Jesus and discover that He already knows us completely and remains near.

The aim of solitude is ultimately not self-discovery but Christ. We withdraw so that our attention can return to Him. As we remain with Jesus without needing to produce anything, the Spirit reminds us that our life flows from union with Christ. We are loved before we accomplish, held before we understand, and invited to abide before we bear fruit.

Guided Practice

Set aside 10–20 minutes today to be intentionally alone with Christ.

Leave your phone somewhere else and find a place where you are unlikely to be interrupted.

Begin simply:

"Jesus, I am here, and You are here."

Then:

  • Sit quietly for a few minutes without trying to accomplish anything.

  • Notice what thoughts or emotions begin to surface.

  • Bring whatever arises honestly before Christ rather than trying to silence it.

  • Read a short Gospel passage and pay attention to what it reveals about Jesus.

  • Spend the remaining time simply enjoying His presence.

If the quiet feels uncomfortable or your mind wanders, don't treat that as failure. Gently return your attention to Christ each time.

Pray:

"Lord Jesus, beneath all the noise and activity of my life, You are here. Quiet the voices that compete for my attention and reveal what I have been too hurried to notice. Meet me with Your grace, deepen my affection for You, and teach me to live from communion with You rather than constant activity."

Reflection Prompt

What surfaced when I removed the usual noise and distractions today, and how did bringing it into the presence of Christ change the way I experienced it?
