✨ Today’s Discipline | Solitude

Meeting with Christ in the Quiet

Solitude is the practice of intentionally withdrawing from the noise of life to enjoy uninterrupted fellowship with Jesus. It is not about escaping responsibilities or isolating ourselves from others. Instead, solitude creates space to remember that our first calling is not to accomplish things for Christ but to be with Him. Before we bear fruit, we are invited to abide.

After a season of ministry, Jesus invited His disciples, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while” in Mark 6:31 (ESV). He knew that faithful ministry flows from communion with the Father. Solitude was not wasted time; it was where strength was renewed, perspective was restored, and love for the Father was deepened. If Jesus made room for quiet fellowship with God, His disciples should expect to do the same.

Solitude forms intimacy because it removes many of the distractions that compete for our attention. In the quiet, we often become aware of our anxieties, ambitions, disappointments, and desires. Rather than avoiding them, we bring them into the presence of Christ. There we discover that He is not impatient with us. He welcomes us, speaks through His Word, and reminds us that our identity rests not in what we accomplish but in belonging to Him. Solitude teaches us that the greatest reward is not having a profound spiritual experience—it is enjoying the presence of Jesus Himself.

Guided Practice

Today, set aside 10–20 minutes to be alone with Christ.

  • Find a quiet place where you can be free from distractions.

  • Leave your phone and other devices behind.

  • Begin with this simple prayer:

"Jesus, I want to be with You."

Then:

  • Read a short passage of Scripture slowly.

  • Sit quietly and reflect on what you've read.

  • If your mind wanders, gently return your attention to Christ.

  • Share whatever is on your heart honestly with Him.

  • Spend a few moments simply resting in His presence before ending your time.

Allow this time to be about enjoying Christ rather than accomplishing something spiritual.

Pray:

"Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me to abide with You. Quiet my heart, deepen my love for You, and teach me to treasure Your presence above every distraction. May my time alone with You shape the way I walk with You throughout the rest of this day."
