✨ Today’s Discipline | Simplicity
Making Space for Christ
Simplicity is the practice of intentionally removing what distracts us so that we can more fully enjoy the presence of Christ. It is not measured by how little we own, but by how freely our hearts belong to Jesus. Simplicity asks us to examine our lives honestly and consider whether our schedules, possessions, habits, and priorities are helping us seek Christ—or quietly pulling our attention elsewhere.
When Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary, Martha was distracted by many good responsibilities while Mary sat at His feet. Jesus gently said in Luke 10:42 (ESV), "One thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her." Simplicity is the practice of choosing that "one thing." It is intentionally making room to be with Christ before becoming consumed by everything else.
This discipline forms contentment because it reminds us that Christ is our greatest treasure. We often fill our lives with more—more possessions, more commitments, more entertainment, more noise—hoping they will satisfy what only Christ can. Simplicity gently loosens our grip on lesser things so that we can hold more tightly to Him. As we create margin in our lives, we discover that the greatest gift is not having more time or fewer possessions, but having greater freedom to enjoy the presence of Jesus.
Guided Practice
Today, prayerfully simplify one area of your life.
Ask yourself:
What is unnecessarily crowding my attention?
What is keeping me from being more present with Christ?
What is one thing I can release today?
Choose one practical step:
Declutter a small space.
Turn off unnecessary notifications.
Leave extra margin in your schedule.
Set your phone aside during a meal or your quiet time.
Replace one distraction with ten minutes of Scripture or prayer.
Remember, the goal isn't simply to have less—it is to make more room for Christ.
Pray:
"Jesus, You are my greatest treasure. Help me release whatever competes for my attention and teach me to seek first Your kingdom. Form in me a heart that is content in You alone."
Reflection Prompt
What did simplifying today make room for, and how did creating that space help me enjoy Christ more fully?
