Making Room for What Matters Most
Simplicity is the practice of intentionally removing what distracts us so we can give our attention more fully to Christ. It is not about owning as little as possible or living with rigid rules. Instead, simplicity asks an important question: Is this helping me love Jesus more? By letting go of unnecessary clutter—whether physical, mental, digital, or emotional—we create space to enjoy God's presence and faithfully steward what He has entrusted to us.
Jesus taught His disciples to seek God's kingdom before everything else. In Matthew 6:33 (ESV), He says, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." Simplicity helps us live with that priority. Rather than allowing possessions, commitments, or endless distractions to compete for our affection, we learn to hold everything with open hands and keep Christ at the center.
Practicing simplicity also cultivates contentment. Our culture constantly tells us we need more to be happier, more successful, or more fulfilled. The gospel tells a different story. In Christ, we have already received every spiritual blessing and possess a lasting inheritance that cannot fade. Simplicity reminds us that our greatest treasure is not found in what we accumulate, but in the Savior who is with us. As we intentionally clear away lesser things, we often discover that Christ has been enough all along.
Guided Practice
Today, choose one area of your life to simplify.
You might:
Clear one small space in your home.
Turn off unnecessary notifications for the day.
Put your phone away during meals or quiet time.
Say no to one unnecessary commitment.
Spend the time or attention you've gained with Christ instead.
As you let go of something today, ask yourself:
"Does this create more room for me to know, love, and follow Jesus?"
Receive the extra space not as emptiness, but as an invitation to enjoy His presence.
Pray:
"Father, free my heart from the distractions that compete for my attention. Teach me to seek first Your kingdom and to find my deepest contentment in Christ alone. Help me make room for what matters most."
Reflection Prompt
What did simplifying today make room for, and how did that extra space help me pay greater attention to Christ?
