Ordering Life Around What Matters Most
Simplicity is the practice of intentionally ordering our lives around God so that what is essential is no longer crowded out by what is unnecessary. It is not about having less for the sake of less, but about having clarity—of heart, mind, and desire—so that we can live undivided before God. In Matthew 6:21 (ESV), Jesus teaches, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Simplicity helps us locate and realign our treasure.
Throughout Scripture, simplicity is closely tied to trust. When life becomes overly full, it often reveals an attempt to secure ourselves through accumulation, control, or distraction. Yet in 1 Timothy 6:6 (ESV), we are reminded, “godliness with contentment is great gain.” Simplicity cultivates contentment by freeing us from the constant pull to have more, do more, or be more. It allows us to receive life as a gift rather than manage it as a burden.
Simplicity also creates space for attentiveness. When our lives are uncluttered—externally and internally—we are better able to recognize God’s presence and respond to His leading. It trains us to live with open hands, trusting that what God has given is sufficient for this moment. In this way, simplicity is not restrictive; it is freeing. It clears away what competes for our affection so that our lives can be more fully oriented toward Christ.
Guided Practice
Today, practice simplifying one area of your life with intention.
Choose one space to focus on:
Your environment: clear a small physical space (desk, bag, room) and remove what is unnecessary
Your schedule: identify one non-essential task or commitment and release or postpone it
Your attention: limit distractions (social media, multitasking) for a set period of time
As you simplify, pay attention to what surfaces—resistance, relief, or even discomfort. Let this be an invitation to notice where life may feel crowded.
As you create space, intentionally fill it with something life-giving: a few moments of prayer, a slow reading of Scripture, or quiet stillness before God.
Reflection Prompt
What feels crowded or overcomplicated in my life right now—and what might it look like to entrust that area to God with open hands?
