Becoming Attentive to the Needs Around You

Service is the practice of offering our time, attention, strength, and resources for the good of others. It is one of the ways the love of Christ becomes visible through an ordinary life. We serve not to prove that we are good or useful, but because Jesus has already loved us with a self-giving love. What we have received from Him begins to shape the way we move toward others.

Paul writes in Galatians 5:13 (ESV), “Through love serve one another.” Christian service is rooted in freedom, not compulsion. Because our identity is secure in Christ, we do not have to make every moment about ourselves. We are free to notice the overlooked person, take the less convenient role, offer help without recognition, and give without expecting something in return.

Service also trains attentiveness. Many opportunities to love are not dramatic; they are easy to miss because they arrive disguised as interruptions, inconveniences, or small needs. Yet Jesus consistently noticed people others passed by. As we learn to serve, the Holy Spirit forms that same attentiveness in us. We begin to ask not only, What do I need to get done today? but also, Who has God placed in front of me to love?

Guided Practice

Today, ask God to make you attentive to one need you might normally overlook.

You might:

• Take care of a task that would make someone else's day easier.

• Give someone your full attention without rushing the conversation.

• Encourage a person who may feel unseen.

• Offer practical help before being asked.

• Use your time or resources to meet a tangible need.

• Complete one act of service without telling anyone about it.

Before you begin, pray:

"Jesus, help me notice who You have placed in front of me today."

As opportunities arise, try not to measure whether they feel important enough. Simply respond with love where you can.

Pray:

"Lord Jesus, thank You for the way You have served me with compassion, humility, and grace. Make me attentive to the needs around me. Free me from self-importance and teach me to joyfully use what You have given me for the good of others and the glory of Your name."
