Following Christ by Serving Others

Service is the practice of joyfully giving ourselves for the good of others because Christ first gave Himself for us. It is one of the clearest expressions of a life being formed by the gospel. We do not serve to earn God's love—we serve because we have already received it. The grace that has been poured into our lives through Christ is meant to overflow into the lives of those around us.

Jesus told His disciples in John 13:35 (ESV), “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Christian service is one of the primary ways that love becomes visible. Whether through a kind word, a listening ear, a generous gift, or a quiet act of faithfulness, serving others reflects the character of Christ, who continually placed the needs of others before His own.

Service also shapes our hearts. It teaches us to notice people instead of merely passing by them. It loosens our grip on selfish ambition and opens our eyes to opportunities God places before us each day. Many of the most Christlike acts of service will never be celebrated by the world, but they are always seen by our Father. As we faithfully love our neighbors in ordinary ways, the Holy Spirit forms within us the humility, compassion, and generosity of Jesus.

Guided Practice

Today, ask God to make you attentive to someone's need.

Begin by praying:

"Jesus, help me see others as You see them."

Then intentionally choose one act of service.

You might:

• Encourage someone with sincere and thoughtful words.

• Offer practical help without waiting to be asked.

• Pray with or for someone who is carrying a burden.

• Complete an unnoticed act of kindness.

• Give generously of your time, attention, or resources.

As you serve, remember that even the smallest act of love offered in Christ's name has eternal significance.

End the day by thanking God for every opportunity He gave you to reflect His love.

Pray:

"Father, thank You for serving me through the life, death, and resurrection of Your Son. Fill me with the humility of Christ and teach me to joyfully love others. May my life become a visible expression of the gospel, pointing people not to me, but to Jesus."
