Reflecting the Love of Christ

Service is the practice of joyfully laying down our own preferences, time, and resources for the good of others. It is not motivated by obligation or the desire to be noticed, but by the love we have already received from Christ. Because Jesus first served us, we are free to serve without seeking recognition, repayment, or approval. Service becomes an overflow of the gospel rather than an attempt to earn it.

Before going to the cross, Jesus knelt to wash His disciples' feet and then said, “I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” in John 13:15 (ESV). The King of kings took the place of a servant, revealing that greatness in God's kingdom is measured not by status but by love. Every act of humble service points us back to the Savior who came “not to be served but to serve.”

Service also forms compassion. As we intentionally look beyond ourselves, we begin to notice people the way Jesus did. Interruptions become opportunities. Ordinary moments become sacred. Small, unseen acts of faithfulness become reflections of Christ's heart. Whether anyone else notices or not, every act of love offered in His name becomes part of His work of making us more like Himself.

Guided Practice

Today, ask the Lord to help you see someone through His eyes.

Begin with this prayer:

"Jesus, help me love others as You have loved me."

Then intentionally choose one act of service.

You might:

  • Encourage someone with thoughtful words.

  • Help with a practical need before being asked.

  • Give your full attention to someone who needs to be heard.

  • Serve quietly without drawing attention to yourself.

  • Pray for someone and let them know you did.

As you serve, remember that your goal is not simply to do something kind—it is to reflect the heart of Christ.

End your day by thanking God for every opportunity He gave you to love others.

Pray:

"Father, thank You for serving me through Your Son. Fill me with His humility and compassion. Let my words, my actions, and my attitude point others to Jesus, and teach me to find joy in serving as He served."

Reflection Prompt

Who did Christ invite me to love through service today, and how did serving them help me become more like Him?
