Loving Others Through the Life of Christ Within Us
Service is the practice of expressing the love of Christ through humble, intentional action toward others. Jesus did not simply teach about love—He embodied it. In John 13:14–15 (ESV), after washing His disciples’ feet, Jesus says, “I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.” Service flows from the character of Christ Himself.
Because we are united to Christ, service is not rooted in performance, recognition, or proving our worth. It is the overflow of having first been loved by Him. The more we receive His grace, the freer we become to give ourselves away in love.
Service forms us by teaching us to look outward rather than remaining consumed with ourselves.
This discipline also trains attentiveness. Love often appears in ordinary opportunities: listening well, helping quietly, encouraging sincerely, or meeting practical needs without seeking credit. As we serve, we participate in the self-giving life of Christ. The smallest acts, done in love, become holy because they reflect Him.
Guided Practice
Today, intentionally serve someone in a quiet and practical way.
Ask:
Who around me might need encouragement, care, or help today?
Choose one simple act:
Offer your full attention in a conversation
Encourage someone with sincere and specific words
Help meet a practical need
Serve quietly without announcing it or seeking recognition
Before serving, pause and pray:
“Jesus, let Your love move through me today.”
Let your service flow from being loved by Christ rather than trying to earn approval.
Reflection Prompt
How did serving someone today help me reflect the heart of Christ—and what did it reveal about the way I love others?
