Living in Continual Communion with Christ
Prayer is the practice of living in continual fellowship with God through Jesus Christ. It is more than presenting requests—it is the ongoing privilege of knowing and being known by the Father. Because Christ has reconciled us to God, prayer is no longer an attempt to gain access to Him. Through Jesus, we have already been welcomed into His presence.
Jesus delighted in communion with the Father. Whether surrounded by crowds or alone in quiet places, He continually returned to prayer. He invites us into that same relationship, saying in John 15:5 (ESV), “Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.” Prayer is one of the primary ways we practice that abiding. It keeps our hearts turned toward Christ throughout the ordinary moments of our day.
Prayer also forms dependence. Every conversation with God reminds us that we are not self-sufficient. We bring our joys, fears, temptations, gratitude, and needs before the One who knows us completely and loves us perfectly. As we pray, the Holy Spirit aligns our hearts with the will of Christ, teaching us not only to ask for His help but to desire His presence above all else.
Guided Practice
Today, practice prayer as an ongoing conversation with Christ. Begin by setting aside a few quiet minutes.
Praise God for who He is.
Thank Him for specific evidences of His grace.
Honestly share what is on your heart.
Pray for someone else's needs as well as your own.
End by surrendering your plans and expectations to Him.
Then, throughout the day, continue returning your attention to Christ with brief prayers such as:
"Jesus, help me remain with You."
"Father, thank You for Your faithfulness."
"Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts and actions."
Allow prayer to become the rhythm that carries you through the day rather than an event that ends when your quiet time is over.
Pray:
"Lord, teach me to live in continual communion with You. Let every conversation draw me deeper into Your love and make me more aware of Your presence."
