Drawing Near to God Through Christ
Prayer begins with Jesus Christ, who has opened the way for us to come to God. We do not approach from a distance or uncertainty, but through Him who brings us near. In Hebrews 4:16 (ESV), we are invited, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Prayer is not striving to be heard—it is coming to the One who has already welcomed us.
Jesus Himself teaches us how to pray—not as a performance, but as relationship. In Matthew 6, He invites us to pray to “our Father,” reminding us that prayer is rooted in belonging. Because of Christ, we are not speaking into the unknown; we are speaking to our Father who knows, cares, and is present.
Prayer also forms us by drawing our hearts into alignment with His. As we bring our desires, fears, and needs before God, we are not only expressing ourselves—we are being shaped. The Spirit works within us, deepening our trust in Christ and helping us rest in His will. Prayer becomes the place where we abide with Him, returning again and again to His presence.
Guided Practice
Today, come to the Father with honesty and attention.
Set aside a few intentional minutes to pray:
Begin by acknowledging who God is—your Father, who sees and knows you
Speak honestly: bring your desires, concerns, and needs before Him
Give thanks: name specific ways you have seen His goodness
Surrender: place your plans and expectations into His hands
After you speak, sit in stillness for a moment. Let yourself be with Him, not just talking, but remaining.
Return to prayer throughout the day in small, honest moments.
Reflection Prompt
What did I bring before the Father today—and how did I experience drawing near to Him through Christ?
