Rejoicing in the Victory of Christ

Celebration is the practice of intentionally rejoicing in the goodness, faithfulness, and saving work of God. Throughout Scripture, celebration is more than a response to favorable circumstances. It is an expression of worship that remembers what God has accomplished and rejoices in the hope He has secured for His people. For Christians, the greatest reason for celebration is found in the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death.

Paul declares in 1 Corinthians 15:57, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (ESV). These words come near the conclusion of Paul's extended teaching on the resurrection. He reminds the Corinthians that Christ has been raised from the dead and that those who belong to Him will also share in the resurrection. Death, which entered the world through sin, will not have the final word. Through Jesus Christ, God has secured a victory that no human effort could accomplish.

This truth gives Christian celebration a remarkable foundation. We do not rejoice because life is free from suffering, disappointment, or uncertainty. We rejoice because Christ has conquered the greatest enemies we could ever face. His resurrection assures us that sin and death do not determine our ultimate future. Even as we experience the difficulties of living in a fallen world, we have a living hope grounded in the finished work of our Savior.

Yet it is possible to become so familiar with the message of the gospel that we rarely stop to celebrate what it means. We may acknowledge Christ's resurrection as a central doctrine of our faith without regularly allowing its significance to stir our gratitude and joy. Celebration invites us to remember that the resurrection is not merely an event we believe happened in the past. It is the foundation of our present life in Christ and the guarantee of our future hope.

Through the Holy Spirit, we are united to the risen Christ and empowered to live in light of His victory. Our labor in the Lord is not in vain, our hope is not misplaced, and our future is not uncertain. The same chapter that celebrates Christ's triumph concludes with an invitation to remain steadfast and faithful in His work. Our joy in Christ becomes a source of encouragement as we continue to follow Him.

Celebration, therefore, is both remembrance and anticipation. We rejoice in what Christ has accomplished, give thanks for the life we have received through Him, and look forward to the day when His victory will be fully revealed.

Guided Practice

Today, practice celebration by intentionally rejoicing in the victory Jesus Christ has secured through His death and resurrection.

Begin by reading 1 Corinthians 15:50–58.

Then move through four invitations.

1. Remember what Christ has accomplished.

Take a few moments to consider the significance of Jesus' resurrection.

Reflect on these truths:

  • Through Christ, your sins can be forgiven and you can be reconciled to God.

  • Through His resurrection, death has been defeated.

  • In Christ, you have received the hope of eternal life.

  • Because He lives, your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Choose one of these truths and spend time thanking God for it.

2. Express your gratitude.

Consider how your life has been changed by the saving work of Jesus.

Perhaps you have experienced:

  • Freedom from the guilt of past sin.

  • A renewed sense of purpose.

  • Strength to persevere through hardship.

  • Growth in your relationship with God.

  • Hope in the face of uncertainty.

  • The encouragement of belonging to the body of Christ.

Write a brief prayer of thanksgiving for what God has accomplished in your life.

3. Celebrate with joy.

Choose a tangible expression of celebration today.

You might:

  • Sing a hymn or worship song about Christ's resurrection.

  • Gather with your church community and participate wholeheartedly in worship.

  • Share with a friend something you are grateful for in Christ.

  • Enjoy a meal with loved ones as an expression of gratitude.

  • Spend time outdoors, remembering the promise of God's coming renewal of creation.

  • Encourage another believer with the hope of the resurrection.

Allow your celebration to be a joyful response to the gospel.

4. Carry the hope of Christ into the week ahead.

Read 1 Corinthians 15:58 once more.

Consider how the resurrection gives meaning to your everyday faithfulness.

What responsibility, relationship, or calling will you return to this week?

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you approach it with renewed confidence, remembering that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Celebration does not require you to ignore the difficulties you may be facing. It invites you to remember that, because Christ is risen, those difficulties do not have the final word.

Pray:

"Heavenly Father, thank You for the victory You have given us through Jesus Christ. I rejoice that through His death and resurrection, sin has been defeated, death has lost its final claim, and eternal life has been secured for those who belong to Him. Forgive me for the times I have become so familiar with the gospel that I have neglected to celebrate its glory. By Your Holy Spirit, renew my gratitude, strengthen my hope, and fill my heart with joy in the risen Savior. Teach me to live faithfully in light of His victory, confident that my labor in the Lord is not in vain. May my life continually proclaim the goodness and glory of Jesus Christ. Amen."

Reflection Prompt

How does the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death give me reason to rejoice today, and how might that hope change the way I approach the week ahead?
