✨ Today’s Discipline | Fasting

Making Space to Hunger for Christ

Fasting is the practice of voluntarily setting aside something good for a period of time in order to become more attentive to God. At its heart, fasting is not about what we give up, but about whom we seek. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 4:4 (ESV), “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Fasting teaches us that our deepest need is not ultimately physical, emotional, or material—it is Christ Himself.

Throughout Scripture, fasting often accompanies prayer, repentance, dependence, and seeking God’s guidance. It is a way of bringing our whole selves before God—body and soul. When we fast, we intentionally create space where our normal comforts once existed. That space becomes an invitation to turn our attention toward Christ rather than immediately satisfying our desires.

Fasting also reveals what we depend on. Hunger, discomfort, or the absence of something familiar often exposes the habits and attachments that quietly shape us. Yet this is a gift. Christ meets us in our need, reminding us that He is the Bread of Life. As we fast, we learn not merely to deny ourselves, but to delight more fully in Him.

Guided Practice

Today, choose one way to fast intentionally.

You might:

  • Skip one meal and use that time for prayer

  • Fast from social media or digital entertainment

  • Set aside a comfort or convenience that you regularly rely upon

When you notice the absence of what you’ve set aside:

  • Pause and pray rather than immediately filling the space

  • Turn your attention to Christ

  • Ask Him to deepen your desire for Him

  • Read a short passage of Scripture and reflect on it

Pray:

“Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Teach me to hunger for You more than the things I often turn to for comfort, distraction, or satisfaction.”

Reflection Prompt

What did my fasting reveal about the desires and dependencies of my heart—and how did it draw me toward Christ today?
