✨ Today’s Discipline | Fasting
Seeking the Satisfaction of Christ
Fasting is the practice of willingly setting aside something good so that our hunger for Christ might become greater than our hunger for anything else. It is not about proving our devotion or earning God's favor. Instead, fasting creates space for us to remember that every earthly gift points beyond itself to the Giver. It teaches us that our deepest satisfaction is found not in what we consume, but in the One who gave Himself for us.
When the crowds sought Jesus because He had fed them with bread, He redirected their attention to something greater. He declared in John 6:35 (ESV), “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” Jesus does not merely satisfy one of our needs—He is Himself the fulfillment of our deepest longing. Fasting helps us remember that every earthly appetite ultimately points us toward Him.
This discipline also reveals the subtle places where our hearts seek comfort, control, or security apart from Christ. Hunger, silence, or the absence of a familiar habit often exposes what we instinctively reach for. Yet this is not cause for discouragement. It is an invitation to grace. As those desires come into the light, we bring them to Jesus, trusting that He is gentle with our weakness and faithful to satisfy those who seek Him. Fasting becomes an opportunity to exchange temporary comforts for deeper communion with Christ.
Guided Practice
Today, choose one thing to intentionally fast from.
You might:
Skip one meal.
Step away from social media or entertainment.
Set aside a comfort or habit that regularly occupies your attention.
Whenever you notice your hunger or the desire for what you've given up:
Pause before filling the void.
Turn your attention to Christ in prayer.
Read a few verses from Scripture.
Thank Jesus that He is your true source of life and satisfaction.
Let each moment of longing become an invitation to seek Him.
Pray:
"Lord Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Teach me to hunger for You above every earthly comfort. Form my desires so that my heart finds its deepest joy, peace, and satisfaction in Your presence alone."
