✨ Today’s Discipline | Fasting
Making Room for a Greater Hunger
Fasting is the practice of willingly setting aside something good so that our hearts may hunger more deeply for Christ. It is not an attempt to earn God's favor or prove our devotion. Instead, fasting creates space for us to remember that our greatest need is not ultimately physical, emotional, or material—it is Jesus Himself.
Jesus declared in John 6:35 (ESV), "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." Every earthly hunger points beyond itself to our deepest longing for Christ. When we fast, we intentionally allow that longing to remind us that only He can truly satisfy the soul. The discomfort of going without becomes an invitation to turn toward the One who never leaves us empty.
Fasting also reveals the attachments of our hearts. Whether we fast from food, social media, entertainment, or another good gift, we often discover how quickly we seek comfort, distraction, or control apart from God. Yet Christ meets us there with grace. Rather than exposing our weakness to shame us, He exposes it so that He might satisfy us with Himself. Fasting teaches us that spiritual formation is not about becoming stronger on our own, but about becoming increasingly dependent upon Christ.
Guided Practice
Today, choose one thing to intentionally set aside.
You might:
Fast from one meal.
Step away from social media or entertainment.
Give up a comfort or habit that normally fills your attention.
Whenever you notice the absence of what you've set aside:
Pause and acknowledge your hunger or desire.
Turn your attention to Christ in prayer.
Read a few verses of Scripture.
Thank Jesus that He is your true source of life and satisfaction.
Allow every moment of hunger to become a reminder to seek Him.
Pray:
"Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Teach me to hunger for You more than anything else. Form my desires so that my deepest satisfaction is found not in temporary comforts, but in Your unchanging presence."
Reflection Prompt
