✨ Today’s Discipline | Fasting
Hungering for Christ Above All Else
Fasting is the practice of willingly laying aside something good so that our desire for Christ may grow stronger. It is not a way to earn God's favor or demonstrate spiritual strength. Rather, fasting is a tangible reminder that our deepest need is not found in what we consume, but in the One who sustains us. Every fast is an opportunity to turn our physical hunger into a spiritual longing for Christ.
After fasting for forty days in the wilderness, Jesus responded to temptation by saying, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” in Matthew 4:4 (ESV). Jesus revealed that true life is found in dependence upon the Father. As those united to Christ, we practice fasting not to imitate His suffering alone, but to share in His dependence and learn to find our satisfaction in Him.
Fasting also exposes what our hearts often rely upon apart from God. Whether we fast from food, technology, entertainment, or another comfort, the absence reveals our habits, attachments, and desires. Yet this is not an occasion for guilt—it is an invitation to grace. Christ meets us in our weakness, gently drawing our hearts away from temporary comforts and back to Himself. In fasting, we discover again that He is the Bread of Life, and that His presence satisfies more deeply than anything this world can offer.
