✨ Today’s Discipline | Fasting

Learning to Hunger for Christ

Fasting is the practice of willingly setting aside something good so that our hearts can be reminded of what is best. It is not an attempt to impress God or earn His favor, but an invitation to deepen our dependence on Christ. By creating space through self-denial, we become more aware of our need for the One who alone satisfies.

When Jesus fasted in the wilderness, He answered the tempter with the words of Deuteronomy, saying, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, ESV). His hunger became an opportunity to demonstrate that life is ultimately sustained by God. Fasting teaches us the same lesson. Every physical appetite points us to our deeper spiritual hunger for Christ.

This discipline also reveals the places where our hearts seek comfort, control, or satisfaction apart from God. Whether we fast from food, technology, entertainment, or another good gift, the absence often exposes what has quietly become a source of dependence. Yet this exposure is an act of grace. Christ meets us in our weakness and gently redirects our desires toward Himself. Fasting becomes not merely an act of self-denial, but an act of deeper communion with the Bread of Life.

Guided Practice

Today, choose one thing to intentionally fast from.

You might:

  • Skip one meal and use that time for prayer.

  • Fast from social media or digital entertainment.

  • Set aside a comfort or habit that regularly occupies your attention.

Whenever you feel the desire for what you've given up:

  • Pause before reaching for it.

  • Turn your attention to Christ in prayer.

  • Read a few verses of Scripture.

  • Ask Him to satisfy the deeper hunger of your heart.

Remember, the goal is not simply to go without something. The goal is to make more room for Christ.

Pray:

"Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Teach me to hunger for You above every lesser comfort. Form my desires so that my deepest satisfaction is found in Your presence."
