Rejoicing in the God Who Is With You

Celebration is the practice of intentionally enjoying the goodness of God. It trains us to notice grace, give thanks for what God has provided, and rejoice in who He is. In a life where our attention can easily settle on what is missing, unresolved, or difficult, celebration turns our attention toward the God who is already present and at work.

Zephaniah 3:17 gives us a remarkable picture of God’s relationship with His people: “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness” (ESV). Before Scripture calls us to rejoice in God, it reveals a God who delights in saving His people. Christian joy begins there. We celebrate because God has drawn near, rescued us through Christ, made us His own, and promised never to leave us.

This means celebration does not have to wait until everything is resolved. There will always be prayers we are still praying and places where we are still waiting. Yet even there, we have reasons for joy that our circumstances cannot take away. Christ is risen. Sin and death have been defeated. We belong to God. His Spirit dwells within us. Our future with Christ is secure. Celebration teaches us to let those realities shape the atmosphere of our lives even while some parts of our stories remain unfinished.

Guided Practice

Make today an opportunity to actively enjoy God’s goodness.

Choose a few ways to celebrate:

  • Put on music that leads you to worship and sing along.

  • Share a meal with people you love.

  • Write down something about God Himself that gives you reason to rejoice.

  • Think of one way God has cared for you recently and thank Him specifically.

  • Celebrate something good happening in someone else’s life.

  • Enjoy a gift God has given you—beauty, laughter, friendship, creativity, food, or rest—without rushing past it.

At some point today, say aloud:

“The Lord my God is in my midst.”

Let the presence of God, rather than the perfection of your circumstances, become your reason for joy.

Pray:

“Father, thank You that my joy is rooted in something greater than my circumstances. You have drawn near to me through Christ and made me Your own. Open my eyes to Your goodness today. Teach me to receive Your gifts with gratitude, rejoice with others freely, and become a person whose life bears witness to the joy of belonging to You.”

Reflection Prompt

If I believed I did not have to wait for everything to be resolved before I could rejoice, what goodness of God would I celebrate today?
