The One Thing Necessary
Scripture
“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’”—Luke 10:41–42 ESV
Devotional
Jesus speaks to Martha with tenderness. He sees the weight she is carrying, the many concerns pulling at her attention, and the anxiety growing beneath her service. His words draw her back to the one thing capable of steadying her heart: His presence.
Mary sits at the feet of Jesus and receives His words. She chooses the good portion because Christ Himself is the treasure being offered. Time with Him is more than preparation for faithful living. His presence nourishes the soul, orders our desires, and teaches us how to carry every other responsibility.
Many things will ask for our attention today, and some of them will be good and necessary. Jesus remains the center that holds them all together. As we listen to Him and receive His love, we learn to move through our responsibilities with a heart anchored in the One who cannot be taken from us.
