The Fragrance of Christ

“For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”—2 Corinthians 2:15 ESV

Devotional

Paul describes believers with a striking image: we carry the fragrance of Christ into the world. Our lives are meant to make something of Jesus perceptible to others—His grace, truth, holiness, mercy, and self-giving love. This happens through far more than what we say. It is revealed through the character formed in us by His Spirit.

The chapter also speaks about forgiveness and restoration within the church. A community shaped by Christ cannot be governed by endless condemnation. Where there is genuine repentance, Paul urges believers to forgive, comfort, and reaffirm love so that sorrow does not become crushing. The gospel creates a people who take sin seriously while also taking grace seriously.

To carry the fragrance of Christ is to let His finished work shape the atmosphere around us. We become people who tell the truth, extend mercy, pursue reconciliation, and refuse to use another person’s failure as a reason to withhold grace forever. As Christ lives in us, others encounter something of His character through the way we respond.

Guided Prayer

Jesus, let my life carry the fragrance of Your grace and truth. Teach me to take sin seriously without becoming harsh, and to extend mercy without ignoring what is true. Where You are calling me to forgive, comfort, or pursue reconciliation, give me the humility and courage to obey. Form Your character in me so that others encounter something of You through the way I love. Amen.
